Innsbruck Old Town – time capsul of Tyrole culture
Innsbruck Old Town is a time capsule of culture and history. The squares in the city centre serve as venues for several regular events, such as the Golden Roof Challenge for athletics fans or concerts featuring international stars at Congress Innsbruck. One of the city’s celebrated landmarks is the most beautiful roof in Tyrol, the “Goldene Dachl” (Golden Roof), harking back to the heyday of this Alpine city that was once considered the centre of continental Europe.
„Nutze jeden Augenblick, lass keinen Tanz im Leben aus, mitnehmen kannst du nichts.“
(“Use every moment, dance every dance, you can’t take anything with you.”)
It’s said that the scroll found on the relief of Tyrol’s most famous roof bears this inscription. This is conjecture – historians have not yet been able to fully decipher it. The Tyrolese however have embraced this slogan and turned the square in front of the “Dachl” into an inviting pedestrian zone. Enjoy a slice of Sacher Torte or apple strudel with vanilla sauce at one of the cosy cafés.
A time capsule of Tyrolean culture. The late Gothic facades, the arcades and colourfully decorated bay windows, from where Emperor Maximilian I once surveyed the hustle and bustle in the streets, will take you back in time. This city is steeped in history and vibrancy.
